North Yorkshire Coast Research School
We are the Research School for the North Yorkshire Coast Opportunity Area. Mari Palmer, headteacher of Settrington All Saints’, has been leading the research and development strand of the Esk Valley Teaching Alliance for the last five years. We are a small rural primary, in a varied group of schools within our alliance. At Settrington we have a particular interest in research in mathematics, foundation subjects and outdoor learning, but we have others in our alliance who have conducted research in feedback, literacy and early years and Quality First Teaching. We believe in giving children a broad, all round experience of primary education and giving them the confidence to tackle all activities.
We have conducted research projects with up to 17 schools involved (an academic research project across primary and secondary) as well as smaller scale research projects in individual schools. Published research has included an NCETM project (around Y2/3 transition in maths), using online platforms for reading discussion groups and dyslexia in mathematics.
We work very closely with others and are very happy sharing ideas as we believe this benefits all involved. We have links with many different organisations which we greatly value.
